Happenings in April

In light of all of the studying for exams and wrapping up clinical rotations, the month of April brought about many activities for NCSSU.

Our community event this month consisted of two activities that took place on April 14th. The “new juniors” graciously volunteered to take part at this year’s Seawolf Decision Day. At this event, the members of NCSSU were able to speak with incoming freshman about the nursing program and answer any questions that they had. It was a great opportunity for us to share about our amazing nursing program at Sonoma State.

The second activity that took place on April 14th was an event called Expanding Your Horizons. At this event, girls from local junior-high and middle schools who were interested in math or science came to SSU for a day of fun and learning. A few nursing students volunteered at the “nursing station” of this event where Family Feud, Wheel of Fortune, and Jeopardy were played. The junior-high students answered questions related to health and nursing, and a short Question & Answer section followed. This was a fun and exciting way to educate the local youth about the nursing profession.

Our social event for the month was a hike at Spring Lake in Santa Rosa. Despite having to study for a big test, we chose to put down our books to enjoy the beautiful Saturday. We had fun walking around the lake, chatting, and breaking a sweat at the exercise stations.

Good luck to all as you are finishing up finals, papers, projects, or graduating!

Helping the Community

We are right into the middle of the semester, but that doesn’t mean that we are falling short of our club goals!

At the beginning of the month, students and faculty collected items to be donated to NAMI Sonoma County. NAMI is an excellent organization that is dedicated to improving the lives of those diagnosed with a mental illness. Over the years, SSU nursing students have formed connections with NAMI after attending seminars, meetings, and having members come for in-class presentations. We are excited that so many students and faculty members joined in this donation, and NAMI Sonoma County was grateful for all of the goodies that were donated!

On March 19th, three groups of students volunteered at Catholic Charities in Santa Rosa and the Redwood Empire Food Bank. At these organizations we were able to prepare and serve food to those in our community. We had a great time putting our books & stethoscopes down and serving the community in a new way!

Hope everyone has a great spring break. Remember to RELAX!

Start of Something New

Hey Everyone,

New and exciting things have been happening in the Nursing Club at SSU! Only one month into the semester and we have already had our first get-together (Sweet & Salty Party) and have arranged our first community service project! It was great seeing new and old faces at the Sweet & Salty Party and we highly encourage EVERYONE to attend these monthly social events!

Our community service project for this month is benefiting NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Sonoma County. We are collecting non-perishable items, toiletries, and un-popped popcorn for the members of this organization. If you would like to contribute either contact your class representative (Marissa Maple or Chelsea Tabellion), or bring your items to our next meeting on March 5th in Stevenson 2079 at 1 pm. This will be the last day to contribute to this service project!

We would love to see you at our next meeting! We will be going over our upcoming social events (laser tag, mini-golf, & ice-skating), as well as our March community service projects.

Good luck to you as this semester continues!
